NABARD and CSIR-CFTRI, Mysuru signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) in July 2026 to strengthen agro-food processing in Kalyana Karnataka. The collaboration covers technology transfer, process standardisation, product development, quality assurance, and capacity building for FPOs and SHGs across seven districts: Bidar, Yadgir, Kalaburagi, Raichur, Koppal, Ballari, and Vijayanagara. CSIR-CFTRI will support Farmer Training and Common Facility Centres (FT-CFCs) established by NABARD in the region.

Kalyana Karnataka — comprising the historically underdeveloped districts of north-eastern Karnataka — has long suffered from low agricultural value addition, weak market linkages, and poor post-harvest infrastructure. Farmers in this belt predominantly grow pulses, millets, oilseeds, and horticulture produce, but the absence of processing capacity means produce is sold raw at low farm-gate prices, compressing incomes.

NABARD's FT-CFCs are shared processing infrastructure set up to lower capital barriers for small farmers and FPOs. However, infrastructure alone does not create market-ready products — that requires food science expertise, standardised SOPs, quality protocols, and trained manpower. This is exactly the gap CSIR-CFTRI fills.

CSIR-CFTRI, headquartered in Mysuru, is India's premier food technology institute under CSIR. It brings laboratory-proven technologies in processing, packaging, shelf-life extension, and food safety directly to grassroots FT-CFCs across all seven districts.

The MoA is significant for NABARD Grade A aspirants because it embodies three of NABARD's core mandates: FPO promotion, SHG capacity building, and rural enterprise development. It also demonstrates how NABARD bridges the 'lab-to-land' gap — a theme frequently tested in NABARD's descriptive paper. The seven-district focus under Kalyana Karnataka also connects to aspirational district frameworks and state-level development finance, making it a multi-angle topic for both objective and descriptive questions.
