NABARD signed an MoU with Mahatma Phule Renewable Energy and Infrastructure Technology Ltd (MAHAPREIT) to finance biomass, biogas, and green infrastructure projects in rural India, starting with Maharashtra. Key focus areas include agricultural residue-based bioenergy, climate-resilient infrastructure, Gram Panchayat assets, solar micro cold storage, and decarbonisation of government buildings. The partnership combines NABARD's rural finance expertise with MAHAPREIT's renewable energy capabilities. NABARD Chairman Shaji Krishnan V announced the collaboration.

This MoU is significant because it directly operationalises NABARD's mandate under climate finance and rural development by bringing in a state-level renewable energy agency as an implementation partner. MAHAPREIT is Maharashtra's nodal agency for renewable energy infrastructure, making this a centre-state synergy model for green financing.

For NABARD Grade A aspirants, the deeper relevance lies in understanding how NABARD deploys its climate finance tools—NABARD has dedicated mechanisms like the National Adaptation Fund for Climate Change (NAFCC), Green Climate Fund (GCF) accreditation, and its own Climate Change Fund. This MoU channels such financial architecture toward grassroots biogas and biomass projects, converting farm waste (paddy straw, sugarcane residue) into energy—addressing two rural pain points simultaneously: stubble burning pollution and farmer income supplementation.

The inclusion of solar-powered micro cold storage at village level directly addresses post-harvest losses, which cost India an estimated ₹90,000 crore annually. Financing Gram Panchayat and PRI infrastructure through this partnership also aligns with the Aspirational Districts Programme and NABARD's Rural Infrastructure Development Fund (RIDF). The circular economy angle—biomass as both waste management and energy generation—positions this as a model replicable across agri-residue-rich states like Punjab, Haryana, and UP.

Examiners at NABARD Grade A will test whether candidates can link such partnerships to NABARD's broader institutional role in refinancing, direct lending, and climate finance facilitation.
