Rubio, Jaishankar, and UAE FM hold trilateral talks on energy security

What happened

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio met Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and UAE Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan for trilateral discussions on energy security. The meeting signals growing convergence among the US, India, and UAE on stable energy supply chains. Energy security has become a central theme in India's foreign engagements amid global supply disruptions, Russian oil import debates, and the Gulf's role as India's primary hydrocarbon supplier.

Why it matters

This trilateral meeting sits at the intersection of three major geopolitical relationships: the US–India strategic partnership, the India–UAE Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), and the broader US–Gulf alliance architecture.

Energy security for India is not merely about oil prices. The Gulf region — led by Saudi Arabia and the UAE — accounts for nearly 60% of India's crude oil imports. The UAE is also India's third-largest trading partner and the corridor through which a significant portion of Indian diaspora remittances flow.

For the US, energy diplomacy with India involves pushing back against India's continued purchase of discounted Russian crude oil since the 2022 Ukraine invasion. Washington has consistently urged New Delhi to diversify away from Russian energy — a pressure point that adds strategic texture to this trilateral.

The UAE, meanwhile, has positioned itself as a swing energy supplier and a key node in the India–Middle East–Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC), announced at the G20 New Delhi Summit in 2023. Energy, infrastructure, and trade are therefore layered into a single diplomatic conversation.

For exam purposes: understand the India–UAE CEPA (signed February 2022, effective May 2022), India's crude oil import sources, and IMEC's composition and significance. These are recurring static anchors that examiners attach to news events involving Gulf diplomacy.
